About the Learning Disabilities Association of the Ozarks

The Learning Disabilities Association of the Ozarks is a non-profit, volunteer organization committed to children and adults who have learning disabilities. The group was founded in 1967 by parents of children whith learning disabilities. They saw the need to provide support and guidance to other families experiencing this challenge.

The membership of LDA of the Ozarks is a diverse mix of people from all walks of life. Many members are the parents of children who have specific learning disabilities. Active members also include teachers, other education professionals, and adults with learning disabilities.

LDA of the Ozarks is southwest Missouri’s affiliate member of LDA of America. Along with other regional and state affilates these organizations work together to provide children and adults who have learning disabilities, and their families, the best and most recent information available regarding effective learning tools and techniques.

Most importantly, LDA encourages communication. LDA of the Ozarks can help you find answers to your questions and will provide the support and understanding you and your family need. To this end LDA of the Ozarks:

  • Provides information, service referrals, and support to parents, individuals with learning disabilities, teachers, and other professionals.

  • Monitors and provides information to members on special education legislation at federal and state levels.

  • Awards scholarships to high school seniors with learning disabilities who plan to attend college or a post-secondary training facility.

  • Hosts workshops and speakers.

  • Fosters awareness, understanding, and communication between parents, educators, and the community about specific learning disabilities.

  • Advocates appropriate and effective teacher training for specific learning disabilities.

  • Provides publications, pamphlets, and other information resources.

  • Publishes LDA News In Brief, a newsletter that alerts members to local, regional, and national meetings and workshops, and informs members of new teaching and learning techniques and research.
The Learning Disabilities Association of the Ozarks is funded solely by membership dues and private donations. If you are a parent of a child with a learning disability, a professional in the field, or an adult with a learning disability, we encourage you to join forces with us and become a member.
